ForestLand Foundation Sierra Leone
Empowering Communities and Transforming Lives
ABOUT US
ForestLand Foundation-SL is a Sierra Leone–based non-governmental organization dedicated to advancing sustainable development through an integrated, community-driven approach that places people, ecosystems, and future generations at its core. The Foundation works to empower marginalized communities, protect vulnerable populations, and promote inclusive growth while addressing pressing social, environmental, and public health challenges.
Anchored in the One Health approach which recognizes the strong interconnection between human health and the environment.
ForestLand Foundation-SL designs and implements holistic interventions that respond to complex, real-world challenges. By acknowledging that environmental degradation, climate change, and social inequalities directly impact health outcomes, the Foundation promotes solutions that simultaneously improve community well-being and strengthen ecosystem resilience.
Operating across both rural and urban settings, the Foundation collaborates closely with local communities, government institutions, civil society actors, and other stakeholders to co-create sustainable and culturally relevant solutions.
A cross-cutting priority of ForestLand Foundation-SL is the mainstreaming of child support and protection across all programmatic areas. The organization is committed to ensuring that every intervention contributes to creating safe, inclusive, and nurturing environments for children. This includes promoting child rights, safeguarding against abuse and exploitation, and integrating child-focused approaches into health, education, governance, and environmental initiatives.
The organization also prioritizes the empowerment of deprived and marginalized youth and women as key drivers of sustainable development. Through skills development, education, leadership training, and economic empowerment initiatives, ForestLand Foundation-SL enables young people and women to build resilience, access opportunities, and actively participate in decision-making processes.
ForestLand Foundation-SL places strong emphasis on preventive health and environmental sustainability, recognizing that healthy environments are fundamental to human well-being. Its initiatives support improved sanitation and hygiene, awareness of environmentally linked diseases, and climate-resilient livelihoods, while promoting behavioral change and community ownership through education, advocacy, and capacity-building.
In line with its commitment to inclusion and equity, the Foundation ensures the meaningful participation of women, children, youth, and other marginalized groups, amplifying local voices and fostering community leadership. This inclusive approach strengthens resilience, promotes social cohesion, and ensures long-term, sustainable impact.
Through its integrated One Health framework, ForestLand Foundation-SL continues to build a future where communities thrive in harmony with their environment creating lasting improvements in public health, child protection, livelihoods, and ecological sustainability across Sierra Leone.

OUR PROGRAMS
Comprehensive initiatives designed to address critical needs and create sustainable impact across Sierra Leone.
Advocacy and Education
Through advocacy and education, the Foundation seeks to influence policies, shift social norms, and empower communities with knowledge and skills. It conducts targeted advocacy campaigns at community and national levels to address key development issues such as health, education, gender equality, and environmental protection. The organization supports both formal and non-formal education initiatives, including adult literacy programs, community learning spaces, and school support interventions. It works to improve access to quality education, particularly for girls and marginalized children, by addressing barriers such as poverty, discrimination, and lack of resources. In addition, ForestLand Foundation-SL promotes life skills education, digital literacy, and youth engagement programs that equip young people with the tools needed for personal development and active citizenship
Health and WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene)
ForestLand Foundation-SL implements comprehensive, community-based health and WASH interventions aimed at preventing disease and improving overall well-being. The organization promotes access to safe and clean drinking water through the rehabilitation and development of water sources, as well as community-led water management systems. It supports the construction and use of improved sanitation facilities, while advancing Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) approaches to eliminate open defecation. The Foundation conducts extensive hygiene promotion and behavior change campaigns focused on handwashing, menstrual hygiene management, and safe household practices. It also delivers health education on communicable and environmentally linked diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, and malaria. Special attention is given to vulnerable groups, particularly children and women, by integrating child health, nutrition awareness, and school WASH programs that create safe and healthy learning environments.
Climate-Smart Agriculture and Environmental Protection
ForestLand Foundation-SL promotes sustainable and climate-resilient agricultural practices that enhance food security, increase productivity, and improve livelihoods. The organization trains farmers in climate-smart techniques such as crop diversification, agroecology, conservation farming, and efficient water use. It also supports access to improved inputs, knowledge-sharing platforms, and farmer field schools that encourage innovation and peer learning. In addition, the Foundation implements environmental protection initiatives such as reforestation, afforestation, and community-led conservation efforts. It raises awareness on the impacts of climate change and promotes locally driven adaptation strategies that help communities manage risks such as flooding, drought, and land degradation. By integrating environmental sustainability with livelihood support, the Foundation ensures that communities are better equipped to withstand environmental shocks while maintaining long-term productivity.
Gender & Governance
The Foundation works to transform unequal power relations and promote inclusive governance systems that ensure equal rights and opportunities for all. It supports women’s empowerment through leadership training, mentorship programs, and the creation of platforms that enable women and youth to actively participate in community decision-making and governance processes. ForestLand Foundation-SL strengthens local governance structures, including community-based organizations and committees, to enhance accountability, transparency, and responsiveness. It promotes human rights awareness, access to justice, and civic education, enabling communities to understand and claim their rights.
